PVAc or Polyvinyl Acetate
Polyvinyl acetate ( PVAc ), poly( ethenyl ethanoate ): Commonly Referred to as wood Glue, white Glue, Carpenter’s Glue, school’s Glue, or PVA glue is an aliphatic rubbery synthetic polymer with the formula (C4H6O2)n. It belongs to the polyvinyl esters family with the general formula -[RCOOCHCH2]-. It is a type of thermoplastics.
As an emulsion in water, PVAc emulsion is applied as a good adhesive for porous materials, particularly for wood, paper and cloth. The stiff Homopolymer PVAc, would be used as base resin in paint and other coatings, as binder in nonwovens, glass fibers, filter papers and textile finishing.
PVAc or Polyvinyl Acetate Applications
- Wood glue (Polyvinyl acetate is known as “white glue” and the yellow as “carpenterʼs glue”.)
- Lower drape sizing
- Paper adhesive during paper packaging conversion
- Wall to wall carpet sizing
- Adhesive in bookbinding and book arts, due to its flexible strong bond and non-acidic nature.(unlike many other polymers)
- Wallpaper adhesive
- Sizing in shoe insole board manufacturing
- Primer for drywall and other substrates
