Geosynthetic Polymers can Protect Buildings

Geosynthetic Polymers : Surface rupturing during earthquakes is a significant risk to any structure that is built across a fault zone that may be active, in addition to any risk from ground shaking. Surface rupture can affect large areas of land, and it can damage all structures in the vicinity of the fracture. Although current seismic codes restrict the construction in the vicinity of active tectonic faults, finding the exact location of fault outcrop is often difficult.

In many regions around the world, engineering structures such as earth dams, buildings, pipelines, landfills, bridges, roads and railroads have been built in areas very close to active fault segments. Strike-slip fault rupture occurs when the rock masses slip past each other parallel to the strike.

A team of researchers led by Associate Professor Behzad Fatahi and supported by Ph.D. candidate Habib Rasouli in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has recently found a groundbreaking solution to protect buildings sitting on deep foundations subjected to large ground deformations due to strike-slip fault rupture.

“The strike-slip fault rupture can significantly damage structures such as buildings and infrastructure such as bridges,” Associate Professor Fatahi said. “The unacceptable performance of conventional deep foundations under strike-slip fault rupture is due to a high level of shear forces in the raft and the large deformation and bending moment in the piles supporting the structures.”

Geosynthetic Polymers: Geomombrane and Geotextile

Associate Professor Fatahi and his team have proposed a new composite foundation system using inexpensive polymeric materials to protect structures sitting on deep foundations.

Geotextile product of Zarif Mosavar Industrial Group

“In this novel mitigation technique, the piles are disconnected from the building using an interposed layer of soil which is reinforced using geotextile layers,” Associate Professor Fatahi said. “Geotextiles are polymeric materials made of polypropylene or polyethylene, which are manufactured in large sheets that can be easily transported to construction sites. The geotextiles embedded in the compacted sand and gravel act as isolator and reduce the impact of large ground deformations due to fault rupture.”

Zarif Mosavar Geomembrane sheet

Associate Professor Fatahi and his team have developed an advanced three-dimensional computer model to evaluate the performance of commonly used connected piles and the proposed composite foundation as a novel mitigation technique. Their findings, recently published the official Journal of the International Geosynthetics polymer Society, Geotextiles and Geomembranes, have proven that the novel mitigation technique using Geotextile layers has a superior performance over the commonly used pile foundation system under strike-slip fault rupture.

Article Geosynthetics polymer: Applications Geosynthetic

“Considering an increasing world population and a need to construct more infrastructure such as bridges and buildings, this novel new foundation system can significantly improve the safety of infrastructure and substantially decrease fatality and damage due to large ground deformations,” Associate Professor Fatahi said.

Article : 9 step in building a geomembrane pool

The team now is looking at extending the solution for protection of structures affected by ground subsidence due to mining and tunnelling activities.

Geotextile (literally means the earth protector) is actually a textile made of polypropylene (P.P) or polyester (PES / PET) polymers, which are produced in woven and non-woven forms.
Woven and Non-Woven Geotextile are permeable and have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain when used with soil. They are produced by various methods such as needle punching ,Heat Bonding, or chemical (Resin Bonding) and have a felt-like structure without specific warp and woof (non-woven). , Bearing pressure and shocks, bitumen absorption and most importantly the possibility of selective passage means the passage of fluids while soil particles are not allowed to pass.

more : Geotextile Applications in Industries

woven geotextile fabric

Woven geotextile fabric is made by weaving polypropylene strips together and by an industrial textile machine. The use of a cross pattern in the production of this type of geotextiles has made this fabric extremely strong. The strength and quality of the woven geotextile hardware increases the tensile strength of the woven geotextile and thus makes it suitable for use under patios, paths, parking spaces and other applications that have a high strength membrane; But cost-effective need, it would be fit.

Structure and production process of textile geotextiles

The method of making these materials is the passage of fibers between each other and the formation of fiber. These geotextiles are made of single-stranded or multi-stranded fibers or cut films. Producing of such texture and suture fittings are used to produce special products. Most of the available geotextiles were made of polyester or polypropylene. Polypropylene material is strong and durable and is lighter than water (with a density of 9%), but polyester is heavier than water in terms of weight and has excellent creep and strength characteristics and is compatible with most soils.

non-woven geotextile fabric

Although nonwoven geotextile has less tensile strength than woven type; But do not forget that the strength, durability and drainage properties of this geotextile, like its woven model, are very ideal and suitable. Nonwoven geotextile is a felt-like fabric made by thermal bonding of polypropylene or a mixture of polypropylene and polyester fibers and then produced using needle drilling, calendaring and other methods.

This type of geotextile fabric is easier to cut and its permeability to water is high and its resistance to liquids does not increase over time, while the woven fabric disappears over time when they are used underground paths or for the Rivers. Therefore, considering such features, it can be said that non-woven geotextiles are used for underpasses and in land and storm drainage systems; Which are the places that need long-term stabilization and filtration of the earth are very ideal.

Geotextiles are divided into two general types, woven and non-woven.

structure and production process of nonwoven geotextiles

Nonwoven or nonwoven geotextiles are produced by bonding materials together, or by chemicals or heat, needle punching, or other methods. These types of geotextiles are made of strip-shaped fibers (short strip fibers, often 1 to 4 inches long) or continuous end filaments that are irregularly distributed in lattice layers. The filaments or fibers connecting the filaments or fibers are connected together. Non-woven geotextiles are made with a needle by taking a large number of small fibers and using a barbed needle to blend the fibers. The role of non-woven geotextiles is sub-drainage, erosion control and road reinforcement on soft and loose soils.

the difference woven & non-woven geotextiles

Geotextile fabrics are used according to the needs of projects and have various benefits and applications; But as the name of these two types of geotextiles shows, the main difference is not in how they work, but the main difference between the two is only in how they are produced. Woven geotextiles are woven and produced by industrial weaving machines, while non-woven geotextiles are produced by a special method called needlework method and by a series of barbed needles and have a non-woven and felt-like appearance.
Polypropylene geotextile is lighter, stronger and more durable than polyester geotextile.

Due to the different construction methods, the weight of a non-woven geotextile in modern methods is often less than the weight of a woven geotextile. In general, because woven geotextiles are used to create separation and reinforcement and do not depend on weight, and conversely, the weight of a non-woven geotextile is often determined because the higher calorific value, it would increase the strength and life.

3 General Types of Asphalt for Road Stabilization

History of Asphalt and Road Construction

Before installing geotextile for road stabilization, it is better to get more familiar with road construction and the difference between concrete asphalt and bitumen asphalt and the structure of geotextile.

The path that connects the two places is called a road, and this type of road dates back to Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 2200 BC. The peak of modern road construction in Iran dates back to the time of Reza Shah, which means that most of the old roads are now about 100 years old and new technologies must be used to build new roads and repair old roads. Roads are designed and built based on the use and passing of heavy and light vehicles and environmental factors.

In the construction of roads, we should pay attention to the factors such as water infiltration, groundwater, canals and infrastructure under the road, ambient temperature, and the contraction and expansion of asphalt in different seasons, and so on.

Three Types of Asphalt for Road Stabilization

Asphalt concrete is a composite or combined material that is commonly used to pave roads, parking lots, airports, as well as the core of soil dams. The history of using this type of asphalt dates back to the early twentieth century, which is classified into three main categories:

hot asphalt concrete

protective asphalt concrete

cold asphalt concrete

1. Hot Asphalt Concrete

Which is the most familiar type of asphalt, ie the same bitumen asphalt and hot stone materials that are spread hot during work. In this type, more than 90% of asphalt mixture is usually made of stone materials.

Hot Asphalt Concrete

Hot asphalt is also classified as different types such as Topka surface asphalt, liner asphalt, asphalt sand, porous asphalt and bitumen asphalt with geotextile installation, which is more common in IRAN.

Learn more : Geotextile of Zarif Mosavar industrial Group

2. Protective Asphalt Concrete

Protective asphalt is a type of paving with a maximum thickness of 255 mm, which is used for the surface of sandy or asphalt roads. In protective asphalts, soluble bitumens, bitumens or pure bitumens with low humidity are used. Protective asphalts are used to make the road surface impermeable, prevent dust, increase the abrasion and slippery roads, as well as temporarily improve the existing asphalt and concrete procedures.

Protective Asphalt Concrete

This type of procedure is very cost-effective compared to hot asphalt due to its speed and ease of implementation and the limited need for asphalt machinery and equipment. Types of protective asphalts include single-layer, multi-layer, cold-rolled protective asphalt, primer type, single coat type, silket type, Red Mix type protective mix, asphalt concrete advantages.

3. Cold Asphalt Concrete

Cold asphalt is obtained by mixing stone materials with soluble bitumen or emulsion at ambient temperature and is divided into two categories: factory cold asphalt and on-site cold mix asphalt. Cold asphalt is used by installing geotextiles in all pavement layers, provided that all design criteria or categories along with traffic restrictions of the route are observed.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Asphalt Concrete for Road Stabilization

Currently, two types of hot bitumen asphalt and cold concrete asphalt are used to build roads and paths, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages, for example:

Advantages of bitumen asphalt : life-Time with quality materials is up to 10 years

Disadvantages of bitumen asphalt : possibility of bitumen leakage, high water absorption,

Advantages of concrete asphalt: Life-Time with quality materials up to 30 years, suitable for sloping areas, suitable for heavy vehicle traffic, beauty and environmental protection, reducing maintenance and repair costs, low water absorption, cold and heat resistant Intense, high run speed, improved drainage, light reflection at night

Disadvantages of concrete asphalt : the need for advanced and expensive machines, the need for high accuracy in its production and execution, the production of high noise during work, the presence of expansion joints, more difficult repairs and operations in concrete pavement.

Cold Asphalt Concrete

Of course, the usage of concrete asphalt on roads instead of bitumen asphalt has been common in various countries for many years, especially in developed countries, but in Iran people, contractors and construction officials are strangers to it and are the only few companies that use this type of asphalt in Iran. They use that the Isfahan-Shiraz freeway is of this category, and to improve the life of the road, the geotextile of Zarif Mosour Company has been used.

Before installing geotextile for road stabilization, it is better to get more familiar with road construction and the difference between concrete asphalt and bitumen asphalt and the structure of geotextile in the construction of roads, it should be paid attention to some factors such as water infiltration, groundwater, canals and infrastructure under the road, ambient temperature, and the contraction and expansion of asphalt in different seasons, and so on.

Installation of geotextiles in coastal protection, tunnel isolation, dam construction, protection of geomembranes in places where geomembranes are used and in road construction that is our subject. Geotextiles do not decompose due to being polymeric in the soil, and because they have the ability to protect, split, filter, reinforce, or discharge, they can be used for a variety of road construction tasks, including improving coating performance and increasing The useful life of asphalt and road and the usage of this fabric reduces the volume of asphalt height by at least 30%.

Geotextile filtration mechanism

is used for filtering Coarse from gravel or utilized in drainage and water conduction.
Not every type of geotextile performs the desired filtration function. An effective fabric should have a large number of openings with a fixed size woven into the fabric. Most of nonwoven fabrics have this standard. The filter cloth should not trap particles inside the pores and should not change during the discharge of porosity under loads.

For proper design of the drainage system, local conditions such as soil characteristics, external loads imposed on the system (static or dynamic) and the prevailing hydraulic conditions must be evaluated.

Geotextile separation mechanism

Installation of geotextile as a separation fabric is a barrier for separation between the surface and the substrate layer.

Strengthening the effect of geotextile and protection of asphalt

Since geotextile has a significant tensile strength, so geotextile layers can be used to strengthen asphalt and make the road more flexible and cause minimal cracking.

Geotextile installation steps for road stabilization

The method of installing geotextiles and geosynthetics for fixing roads with bitumen or concrete asphalt is slightly different, but in general, the implementation method includes the following steps:

Surface preparation

Ingredients of road structure

Terms and distribution of Tack Coat

Geotextile Installation

Tightening geotextile fabric

Final asphalt

1. Surface preparation

To improve the quality and longer life of roads, the surface should be as smooth as possible and free of aggregates and contaminants such as oil and water before spreading the geotextile. Cracks more than 5 mm wide should be filled with bitumen. Larger cavities and cracks should be filled with a suitable hot or cold asphalt mixture.

2. Ingredients of road structure

The topsoil is removed and the subgrade is compacted. Then 600 mm of embankment is done using local materials. Compression is performed up to a height of 150 mm.

Recommended primer: Most of the suitable primers used are 170 grade bitumen with a cut of 10 to 20%.
Lining application: The primer is applied directly on the compacted embankment, which is done by ordinary spreading units.

3. Terms and distribution of Tack Coat

Single coat (coated asphalt) is a hot liquid that is used to saturate the geotextile for waterproofing and attach it to the old coating. Experience has shown that the best connection is achieved using a single grade 170 bitumen coat class. Pure bitumen rapidly increases the bonding strength and allows the geotextile to be in place quickly in the installation of the geotextile.

Required volume of single coat: Excess or insufficient volume of single coat can cause the new cover to be moved or laminated. The single coat material should extend about 5 to 7 cm more than the edges of the geotextile. The single coat should be placed between all overlaps. Depending on the roughness of the road, the porosity of the old pavement, the use or non-application of the leveling layer and the absorption rate of geotextile bitumen, between / 9. Up to 1.2 liters per square meter of single coat is required to saturate the geotextile and connect to the surface of the old coating.

Single coat temperature: The allowable temperature for a single coat is between 143 and 162 degrees Celsius (suitable temperature for laying asphalt). The air temperature should be above 10 ° C for good single coat performance.

Spreading single coat: Note that if asphalt is used, in case of rain on the geotextile before laying the asphalt, the geotextile should be allowed to dry completely. In addition, the minimum density of asphalt pavement should not be less than 4 cm. By observing the above, first the binder layer and then the top layer are installed. The most suitable amount of single coat varies between 0.9 to 1.4 liters per square meter of bitumen, which depends on the condition of the existing road and the type of geotextile selected.

When installing a geotextile, if a heavier geotextile is selected, more single coat should be applied on it. The single coat should be spread by a calibrated spreading truck and the machine should spread the single coat 150 mm wider than the geotextile. After installing the geotextile, it is sprayed on the geotextile with a coating of Class 170 bitumen. This process can be completed with a roller for flattening. If a re-insulation is required, a layer of Class 170 bitumen is re-applied and continued by leveling. The minimum thickness of dense asphalt pavement should not be less than 4 cm. By observing the above, first the binder layer and then the top layer are installed.

4. Geotextile Installation

Geotextile installation is easy and convenient, for projects less than 200 square meters, geotextile can be spread by hand, basic tools and hand tail. For large projects, a simple roll spreader that displays specific stress control devices and has geotextile smoothing presses is recommended. The device can be easily installed on an excavator or in front of a loader and spreads rolls up to 250 kg, resulting in minimal deviation in the path of a wrinkle-free installation. Wrinkles larger than 25 mm should be removed. If the road is wide and the geotextile roll is used side by side, it should be at least 150 mm overlap.

When the geotextile is spread by hand, the lengths of approximately 10 m should be opened and smoothed and placed on the surface before being applied to a single coat in contact with. Brushing should start from the center and go out in two directions. The coat is then spread and the geotextile must be pressed four times with a roller to create a good adhesion to the existing surface.

5. Tightening geotextile fabric

After spreading the geotextile fabric on the road and making sure that there are no lumps under the fabric and the edges overlap, you can fasten the fabric to the bottom in three ways:

use sewing

use adhesives

use nails

Hot Air-Blowing

6. Final asphalt

After leveling and penetrating coating (priming) and surface coating (single coating) and spreading the geotextile fabric, it is the turn of asphalt spreading, which is done in different approaches such as spreading with grader, spreading with paver, and then using metal and rubber rollers. The asphalt is compacted and after the final tests, the road is ready for operation.

Conclusion

Geotextile installation plays an important role in the construction of highways. They are used effectively in almost all new constructions. It greatly increases the service life of the pavement and effectively reduces maintenance costs. This significantly separates the substrate from the subsoil and provides structural strength due to its high resistance to deformation. It also reduces the thickness of the granule period below the base. If geotextiles are used in highway construction, it will be useful because its use reduces the initial costs of construction and frequent road maintenance

Agricultural Water Storage Pool-Geomembrane Pool, Depends on the rate of farming in summer season , and the rate of received rain in other seasons , the water resources shortage would be a serious crisis for farmers , Due to increasing rate of demands for water resources and the existence of some shortages in this process ,the importance of protecting and managing of these resources is being augmented day by day.

Nowadays Agricultural water storage or geomembrane pools are being used more than the concrete, asphalt or bitumen, materials. because they have less economic costs and more life-time and the geomembrane performance costs are lower.

Geomembranes are resistant to sunlight and are much more resistant against cold and warm climate rather than concrete, so that geomembranes would withstand against the temperatures up to + 80 ° C and down to -70 ° C.

Why Geomembrane Pools ?

Geomembrane sheets are nearly 100% impermeable, while concrete, stone, and cement are slightly impermeable. Changing water transfer methods from traditional to modern would be so effective in the field of preventing water loss for distribution networks, and storing water in the rainy or snowy seasons and using this resource for the hot seasons and ease of dewatering at any time of the day or night are some benefits of water storage pools which are implemented by

Final control and filling of agricultural water storage pool’s trench.

1. Locating the agricultural water storage pool (geomembrane pool)

In general , The location of the pool can be selected according to water supply sources such as: water pit, river, aqueduct, spring, flood, etc. and some factors such as the distance to the pool, the slope of the land and the method of transferring water to the pool (pumping, irrigation canal, etc.) and the method of water output to the farm (Gravity, pumping, etc.) would be so effective for this selection, the location should be selected in a method which has the lowest cost and time consuming for pool constructing and leading water to its quitting points. The type of soil structure should also be checked too.

2. The Water Volume and Geometric Shape Calculation for Agricultural water Storage Pools (geomembrane pool)

After mapping, according to the volume of available water resources such as water rights , flow rate , time of water entering to the pool and the volume of water required by the farmer, we calculate the total volume of storable water volume, by considering reliability coefficient.

And due to lack of limitation for insulation of geomembranes in the shape and size of the pool, then the calculation of the geometric shape would be done according to the lowest cost of excavation or embankment.

3. Excavation / Embankment And Standard Floor Construction Of Agricultural Water Storage Pool (geomembrane pool)

Proper floor constructing has an important effect on the health and longevity of the geomembrane sheet in the pool and the pool floor would be built either by digging and pit or by embankment performing, but in both cases, the points that must be observed are:

To prevent the walls from falling, observe the standard slope (1/1) or 45 to 60 degrees of the pool walls.

Smoothing and compacting surfaces with at least 70% density by pounding rollers and collecting gravel and spraying soft materials such as sand.

For the beauty of the geometric shape of the pool and the fact that the walls do not collapse, it is plastered with brick and concreted, but it is not necessary.

Creation of trenches or ponds around the pool in proportion to the depth of the pool with a distance of about 70 to 100 cm with a width of 50 to 70 cm and a depth of 50 cm A pit is dug in which the edges of geomembrane sheets are placed and a number of soil bags are poured. With the addition of water, the sheet can move and be completely fixed in the floor of the bed, and with the full filling of the pool after the leak test, the trench filled with soil or concrete becomes soft.

4. The Geomembrane and Geotextile Selection for Agricultural Water Storage Pools (geomembrane pool)

Due to the great diversity of geomembranes and their manufacturers, choosing the most appropriate geomembranes would be so important, by proceeding more researches the best product with high quality and standard along with its reputable manufacturer would be identified.

In general, any type of geomembrane sheet with any brand must have the specification sheet along with international standard GM13 , an exploitation sheet from the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade and a 10-year warranty sheet , for the depths less than 10 meters and the slope of 45 of 1.5 mm thickness of geomembrane would be recommended and for the Depth greater than 10 meter ,2 mm thickness or more would be suggested.

More : Why Zarif-Mosavar Geomembrane Sheets ?

To prevent any soil erosion , protect geomembranes and prolong its life and avoid geomembranes shrinking, a geotextile protective felt cover which is made of polypropylene PP or PET polyester should be used, which should also have the international standard GT12 and related warranties too, For selecting the type of geotextile depending on the softness of the pool bed, a minimum unit-weight of 300 g and preferably white should be used, and if the amount of pebbles is higher, a higher unit-weight should be used after the announcement of the technical expert.

5. Determination of water input/output for agricultural water storage pools:

Different types of piping:

Input pipe

Output pipe

Water Overflow pipe

The material of all this must be polyethylene and as much as is possible we should not work in the pipes inside the pool and the inlet/input pipe should be worked from the above and if there is any clay in the water we should use the rest pond or multi-layer filter and its outlet should accompanied with pump on the float (preferably by a mesh room made with Plastic and aluminum) or shoe pump.

The output pipe must be at a distance of 1 meter from the edges and corners of the floor and it should be place similar as a siphon inside the hole and it should be fixed by concreting 50 cm around it, this action would prevent welding separation from the pipe on the time which water weight caused the pipe over surface falling and it would prevent any water leakage.

If there is necessity for overflow pipe , it should be installed 10 to 50 cm lower than the pool edge and the pipe diameter would be around 25 cm.

6. Execution Of Geotextile And Geomembrane Layers And Their Welding

Please note that in order to install the insulation, the weather conditions must be convenient for welding, For example there should be no rain and the temperature should be between 0 and 70 Celsius degrees.

First, we connect the wide geotextile protective felt cover with a thermal dryer, and then it is time to use the geomembrane layer.

The edges are placed on top of each other and flattened on the floor and walls of the pool. If the edges are clean and dry, the sheets are welded to each other with two welding lines at a distance of 1.5 cm using an automatic thermal welding machine.

and from that empty space we can use to perform discharge test, air pressure test, spark test specially for the large pools.

More : Four Important Points About Geomembrane Sheets Welding

7. Establishing Protective Fence For Agricultural Water Storage Pool (geomembrane pool)

Due to the importance of preventing human or other animal drowning , specially before any water intake, the installation of fences and warning signs is mandatory and in case of any negligence and occurrence of any accidents and financial or human losses, the owner or operator will be found guilty.

The best materials for the fence are galvanized nets by the mesh of 6 * 6 which is produce by wire of 2.5 along with the width of 2m or an iron pipe with a diameter of 5 cm (scaffolding pipe) with a corner beam of 6 and the length of 300 cm which has the bending angle ,50 cm above it.

50 cm lower of that space, it would be placed in concrete by connecting at least three branches, and the connection points of the fence are made of rings with the wire scale of 3 or 4 (welding wire)and holding pipes, and if necessary, barbed wire is installed.

8. The Water Intake for Agricultural Water Storage Pools (geomembrane pool)

After performing different sorts of testing by related technician , checking welding points (if related pipe got applied ), and controlling the connection joints , we would be able to start water intake for the pool.

as the first level of water intake , we should fill up the pool by the height of 50cm to 70cm from its floor surface, and after passing two days (in which the geomembrane sheet could sit well on the pool floor), we would sign the water line then for third and the fourth days, we should recheck the water lines again , by considering of water evaporation rate for each region.

if the water volume is not reduced , we would proceed to perform next testing levels , for these levels , the pool intake would be done for three levels of 30%,60% and 90% of pool volume then after sheet sitting on pool floor , the water lines would be signed , the reason for pool intake on different levels is to prevent to discharge whole pool water if any holes got occurred , and if there is any water leakage , the holes should be recognized and they should be welded again.

9. Final Controlling and Filling the Agricultural Water Storage Pool’s (geomembrane pool) Trench:

During water intake, a number of soil bags are placed in the trench on the edge of the sheets so that with the addition of water, the sheet can move and be completely fixed in the bottom of the pool bed.

hen after pool intake , the trench hole would be filled by soil or light concrete , please consider this point that if this trench got filled sooner , it would cause more strength or sheet tearing which lead to place the air flow between soil and geomembrane , this air-flow would cause the pool insulation life-time reduction and water leakage.

Some textile products such as non-woven geotextiles are convenient for increasing the life-time and operation of asphalt and its coating, The Geotextile is able to damp received pressures of previous coating through tensile resistance. Geotextile as mediated layer would damp the pressures which are caused by horizontal or vertical cracks. Blending of nonwoven geotextiles with bitumen and asphalt creates an impermeable layer to surface water streams. Due to the proximity of polymer fibers properties to petroleum materials, the adsorption of bitumen and bonding materials to geotextile fabric is would be done well. This will save budget, reduce costs and increase the life time of asphalt.

Two important mechanisms of nonwoven geotextiles

First, as an intermediate layer which is mixed with bitumen, it absorbs stress and pressure, which is caused preventing the wide-spreading of cracks reflected from the previous coating to the new coating layer. Second, as a moisture insulation layer, it prevents snow, rain and other liquids to penetrate to the substrate through surface cracks in the asphalt and moistening the substrate and subsequently causing rupture and weakness in the asphalt substrate. With these two general mechanisms, it causes a significant increase of one hundred percent to one hundred and fifty percent of the asphalt life-time.

AC Coating

This coating is a common procedure for fixing the cracked roads , this method would cover roads cracks temporarily , And after the cover is replaced, it prevents any lateral or longitudinal movement of the road that causes the cracks of the previous cover to spread to the new cover.

Most of these applications are not technical in comparison to a beach reclamation system or a retaining wall, but they are practical and cost-efficient applications of Geosynthetics, and their uses are growing.

Geotextiles are permeable fabrics which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain. They have a wide range of applications and are currently used to advantage in many civil engineering applications including roads, airfields, railroads, embankments, retaining structures, reservoirs, canals, dams, bank protection and coastal engineering. Since polypropylene geotextiles perform well when exposed to water and other inorganic compounds, they are for uses such as pond liners, bank weed control, liners for garden fountain systems, filtra-tion, dividers in ponds, pile wraps, lagoon liners, turbidity curtains, or as in this case, an artificial habitat.

REINFORCEMENT:

Geosynthetics are installed beneath or between soil layers to improve the mechanical properties of soil layers by absorbing the tensile forces and minimising deformation. Geotextiles are used in applications such as retaining structures according to the principles of «reinforced soil», slope stabilization or for foun-dation reinforcement of earthen dams where the subsoil exhibits poor bearing capacity. The use of geosynthetics for reinforcement applications minimises expensive constructive measures and can reduce soil intermixing eliminating the need for additional soil layers.

SEPARATION:

As a separation layer, nonwoven geotextiles are used to prevent adjacent soil layers or fill materials from intermixing. Nonwoven geotextiles that exhibit a high elongation capacity are the materials of choice in most applications. The selection of a suitable product is dependent upon the base course grain size and the operational loads to be expected. The main use of separation nonwovens are road and railway construction, hydraulic and landfill engineering and sport fields.

DRAINAGE:

In the EN ISO standards, the drainage function is defined as «The collecting & transporting of precipitation, ground water and/or other fluids in the plane of the geotextile». Hydraulic properties are decisive for the overall performance of the entire construction, with the water flow capacity in the plane of the geotextile being the most important. The hydraulic properties of Zarif mosavar Geotextiles are designed to drain excess water off the construction – not by passing through the Zarif mosavar Geotextile as when used for filtration, but by flowing in the plane of the geotextile leading it away from the construction. The use of a drainage geotextile ensures ongoing drainage of fluids with minimum pressure loss.

FILTRATION:

In filtration applications such as hydraulic engineering and drainage systems, nonwoven geotextiles are used to retain soil particles while allowing the passage of liquids through the filter media. There are two aspects to filtration that should be evaluated when designing. The mechanical filter efficiency (does the fabric have sufficient soil retention capacity) and the hydraulic filter efficiency (does the water discharge without a hydraulic pressure build up). As with mineral filter layers, the geotextile thickness directly benefits the long-term mechanical and hydraulic efficiency of the filter.

CONTAINMENT:

Geosynthetic containment applications are those in which a textile in the form of a tube, bag or container, is used to encapsulate a construction material, such as soil or sand. They perform project-specific functions such as protection, filtration and separation. Nonwoven geotextiles are the primary products for these applications due to their high elongation capacity.

PROTECTION:

Geomembranes, structures, coated materials as well as related construction elements must often be protected from potential mechanical damage. Without suitable protection damage may occur from sharp edged objects such as stones due to the unevenness of the subsoil or even by the cover material. Mechanically bonded needle-punched nonwovens manufactured from polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PET) fibers are commonly used for protection layers. Specific to nonwoven geotextiles, the protection function is directly related to the thickness and mass per unit area, as a heavier and thicker nonwoven is more likely to provide better protection.

EROSION CONTROL:

Geotextiles are used to prevent surface erosion. By preventing soil particles from being washed off slopes or channels, rapid vegetation is ensured when erosion control mats are used.
