Synthetic and natural fibers, applications, and uses

Fibers is the plural of the word “fiber” and refers to threads whose ratio of length to diameter is more than 100 times. In general, fibers are classified into two categories, natural fibers, and synthetic fibers, and each of these two categories is divided into sub-categories.

Today, natural and synthetic fibers have many applications in different industries. From the industries related to the textile field to other industries that cause the demand and use of fibers to increase in a special way.

Natural fibers

Natural fibers are divided into three categories: plant fibers, animal fibers, and mineral fibers. One of the most widely used natural fibers is cotton, which is classified under plant fibers and is widely used in the textile industry. Hemp, chatay, manila, jute, sisal, abaca, ramie, bamboo, etc. are also considered as other natural plant fibers.

Another category of natural fibers are animal fibers that are obtained from the processing of the body covering of some animals. Among the natural animal fibers, we can mention wool, cashmere, mohair, and silk.

Another type of natural fibers is mineral fibers, which include asbestos or fireproof cotton.

artificial fiber

Synthetic fibers have wider ranges than natural fibers. These types of fibers are a range of polymers that can be converted into fibers. Synthetic fibers have very important and diverse applications. The range of applications of these fibers has caused them to be used in different sectors and areas such as household and daily use in the simplest way and in different industries in the most complex way. Synthetic fibers are also used in complex applications to increase the efficiency of products. Polyester fibers, polyamide fibers, polypropylene fibers, polyolefin fibers, acrylic fibers, polyvinyl chloride fibers and vinyl alcohol fibers are among the most important and widely used synthetic fibers.

Polyester fibers

Polyester fibers constitute the largest volume of synthetic fiber production in the world. Polyester is a type of polymer that contains ester groups and mainly includes polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Other types of polyesters have also been produced, including polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polytrimethyl terephthalate (PTT). These two types of polyester fibers are used in carpet fibers due to the favorable springiness of their constituent fibers.

Polyester fibers alone do not have elastic properties, but after combining them with other types of fibers, elasticity can be created in polyester fibers. On the other hand, cotton, as a natural plant fiber, breathes much better than polyester as a synthetic fiber. The reason for the optimal breathability in cotton is that it allows air flow to pass through the fibers. This factor has caused clothes made of polyester fibers to be more resistant to moisture and wrinkles than cotton clothes.

The advantages of polyester fibers are many. Polyester fibers have a favorable range of physical properties. Among the advantages of polyester fibers are strength, lightness, dyeability, resistance to wrinkles, resistance to the effects of chemicals, easy washing, quick drying, resistance to stretching and shrinking, and resistance to radiation. UV, low absorptivity, cheapness, and mass production of petrochemical sources are mentioned.

It is natural that polyester fibers also have disadvantages that should be considered when using them. The first disadvantage that can be attributed to polyester fibers is that these fibers are made of chemicals and their long-term direct contact with the body can lead to some problems. Also, polyester fibers cause the body to sweat more due to its insulation. High flammability, creation of static electricity, long-lasting smell compared to natural fibers and poor fluff retention compared to nylon, carpet and carpet are other disadvantages of polyester fibers.

Of course, these things do not mean that polyester fibers cause damage to the body. Biodegradable polyesters, which are prepared from lactic acid, glycolic acid, and other hydroxy acids, do not cause any problems in contact with the body. This type of biodegradable polyester fiber is even used in the production of some medical devices, including dissolvable sutures.

PP fibers are polypropylene fibers produced by chain polymerization of propene monomer. Polypropylene fibers are hard, stable, and heat resistant. In addition, these fibers are antistatic, non-magnetic, and non-conductive. PP fibers have a long lifespan. These fibers can be used in a wide range from 0 to 100 degrees without problems. Since PP fiber is odorless and kind to the skin, it can be used without hesitation in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

the product: ZarifMosavar staple fibers + catalog

Polypropylene fibers are superior to polyamide fibers in terms of elasticity and flexibility. These fibers have less abrasion resistance. PP fibers have good thermal insulation properties and are very resistant to acids, alkalis, and organic solvents. These fibers are sensitive to heat and light.
These raw fibers are most widely used in the construction and textile industries. They have special characteristics that make them an ideal supplement to achieve specific benefits when used for construction work, especially when added to concrete. These fibers are combined with cement mortar and increase the tensile strength of concrete significantly.

What is polypropylene fiber made of?

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic “additive polymer” made from a combination of propylene monomers. Plastic parts are used in various applications, including packaging of consumer products, for various industries, including the automotive and textile industries.
By adding PP fibers to cement mortar, the weight or volume of the mortar does not increase or settle. These fibers are a good substitute for thermal rebars in concrete. We can add polypropylene fibers to concrete in various forms in the form of short and separated pieces.
PP fibers are also used for plastic strength. By adding it to plastic, it reduces plastic cracks due to impact or cracking caused by humidity and temperature changes.

Advantages and disadvantages of PP fibers (polypropylene staple fibers)

Advantages: Ability to absorb high energy in concrete, relatively high melting point, alkali resistance, non-magnetic, no dust absorption, high wear resistance, reasonable and cheap price
Disadvantages: Susceptibility to ultraviolet rays of sunlight is associated with correction and difficulty due to the polarity of its dyeing

Uses of polypropylene fibers

PP fibers are used to make ropes, fishing nets, BCF threads, carpets, artificial grass, concrete, upholstery fabrics, etc. They are also used for geotextile fabrics, pavement repair, roofing felt, and artificial ski slopes.

It constitutes the largest volume of synthetic fiber production in the world. Polyester Staple Fiber (PSF) Polyester is a type of polymers that have ester groups, which mainly includes polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Other polyesters, including polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polytrimethyl terephthalate (PTT), are used in carpet fibers due to their superior fiber bounce.

Staple fibers are thin filaments with appropriate length that have the ability to bend and have enough strength for spinning. Staple fibers are those continuous fibers that have a short length (short staple fibers). These fibers are obtained from natural sources such as cotton, hemp, linen and wool. These fibers can be of animal or plant origin.

the product: Staple fibers + technical specifications

Spinning short fibers (staple)

Staple fibers in the textile industry are usually no more than a few inches long, and fiber lengths also vary between species obtained from different sources. Staple fibers are measured in inches or centimeters. They include almost all natural fibers except silk (natural fibers that have no original form).

Natural fibers are divided into three categories: plant, animal and mineral fibers. Among the plant fibers, we can mention cotton, linen, hemp, chatay, manila, jute, sisal, abaca, ramie, bamboo, etc. Among the animal fibers, we can mention wool, cashmere, mohair and silk. Among the mineral fibers, we can mention asbestos or fireproof cotton.

These fibers include polyester, polyamide or nylon, polyolefin, acrylic, aramid and vinyl fibers. These fibers have very important and diverse uses that have made them used in simple household and daily use to various industries and complex and high-tech uses.

Types of staple fibers in the textile industry

Natural staple fibers

Synthetic staple fibers

Natural staple fibers

Most natural fibers such as cotton and wool are staple fibers. In terms of application, there are two general classifications for plants producing natural fibers: Primary and secondary. Primary plants (jute, Kanaf, sisal, and cotton). Secondary plants (pineapples, cereals, stems, etc.). Among other applications, natural fibers extracted from plants are used as reinforcement in thermoplastic and thermoset composites.

Synthetic staple fibers

Synthetic staple fibers (polyolefin staple fibers, polypropylene staple fibers, polyester staple fibers, acrylic staple fibers, viscose staple fibers, nylon, spandex, etc). Man-made staple fibers are made from polymers that do not occur naturally, but are instead produced entirely in a factory or chemical laboratory, almost or always derived from byproducts of petroleum or natural gas. They can also be classified according to their use:

Fabrics woven from staple fibers

non woven

industrial

..

Types of polymers

Polyester (PET)، polypropylene (PP) ، polyamide (PA) ، polyethylene (PE) ،two-component PET-COPET and…

Advantages and disadvantages of staple polyester fibers

Staple polyester fibers It can be an excellent water repellent material for use in durable items. Polyester can also be added to other natural fibers. Polyester fibers are a popular choice for clothing because they are thermoplastic or heat sensitive. This means that fabrics that are 100% polyester can have permanent pleats and take on shapes and patterns.

Advantages of polyester staple fibers

It has a favorable range of physical properties, strong, light, dyeable, wrinkle resistant, resistant to most chemicals, easy to wash – quick drying, resistant to stretching and shrinking, UV resistance. Low absorbency, cheap, mass production of petrochemical resources

Disadvantages of staple polyester fibers

Made of chemicals, skin sensitivities in direct contact with the human body, due to its non-breathable and insulating properties, it causes the body to sweat more, high flammability, prone to static accumulation (static electricity), longer lasting odor than natural fibers. Poor lint retention compared to nylon carpet/carpet, less breathability than natural fibers

tip: Of course, biodegradable polyesters made from lactic acid, glycolic acid, and other hydroxy acids do not cause any problems in contact with the body, even they are used in medical devices such as dissolvable sutures.

Basic information about polyester staple fibers

PET fibers dominate the world’s synthetic fiber industry. They occupy the largest synthetic volume and exceed nylon, rayon and acrylic fibers. They are cheaply and easily produced from petrochemical sources. They also have a favorable range of physical properties. They are strong, light, easily dyeable and wrinkle resistant and have excellent washing properties.

They are used in numerous types and shapes in textile fibers, home textiles and furniture. They form microfibers for outerwear and sportswear.

Polyesters in carpets, industrial fibers, and yarn are used for tire straps, car seat belts, filter cloths, tent cloths, sailcloths, etc. These organic synthetic fibers consist of a high concentration of diacid (terephthalate acid) and alcohol (ethylene glycol). The process used to obtain this polymer is melt spinning with 400% thermal stretch.

Common characteristics of polyester staple fibers

density: 1.39

Durability: 6.1 grams per denier (g/d)

Recycled moisture: ۰٫۴ – ۰٫۲ %

Elastic reversibility (at 5% strain): 65%

Behavior against fire: Relatively resistant and burning (melting) with a lot of smoke

Behavior against ultraviolet rays: Moderate to good resistance
