Synthetic and natural fibers, applications, and uses

Fibers is the plural of the word “fiber” and refers to threads whose ratio of length to diameter is more than 100 times. In general, fibers are classified into two categories, natural fibers, and synthetic fibers, and each of these two categories is divided into sub-categories.

Today, natural and synthetic fibers have many applications in different industries. From the industries related to the textile field to other industries that cause the demand and use of fibers to increase in a special way.

Natural fibers

Natural fibers are divided into three categories: plant fibers, animal fibers, and mineral fibers. One of the most widely used natural fibers is cotton, which is classified under plant fibers and is widely used in the textile industry. Hemp, chatay, manila, jute, sisal, abaca, ramie, bamboo, etc. are also considered as other natural plant fibers.

Another category of natural fibers are animal fibers that are obtained from the processing of the body covering of some animals. Among the natural animal fibers, we can mention wool, cashmere, mohair, and silk.

Another type of natural fibers is mineral fibers, which include asbestos or fireproof cotton.

artificial fiber

Synthetic fibers have wider ranges than natural fibers. These types of fibers are a range of polymers that can be converted into fibers. Synthetic fibers have very important and diverse applications. The range of applications of these fibers has caused them to be used in different sectors and areas such as household and daily use in the simplest way and in different industries in the most complex way. Synthetic fibers are also used in complex applications to increase the efficiency of products. Polyester fibers, polyamide fibers, polypropylene fibers, polyolefin fibers, acrylic fibers, polyvinyl chloride fibers and vinyl alcohol fibers are among the most important and widely used synthetic fibers.

Polyester fibers

Polyester fibers constitute the largest volume of synthetic fiber production in the world. Polyester is a type of polymer that contains ester groups and mainly includes polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Other types of polyesters have also been produced, including polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polytrimethyl terephthalate (PTT). These two types of polyester fibers are used in carpet fibers due to the favorable springiness of their constituent fibers.

Polyester fibers alone do not have elastic properties, but after combining them with other types of fibers, elasticity can be created in polyester fibers. On the other hand, cotton, as a natural plant fiber, breathes much better than polyester as a synthetic fiber. The reason for the optimal breathability in cotton is that it allows air flow to pass through the fibers. This factor has caused clothes made of polyester fibers to be more resistant to moisture and wrinkles than cotton clothes.

The advantages of polyester fibers are many. Polyester fibers have a favorable range of physical properties. Among the advantages of polyester fibers are strength, lightness, dyeability, resistance to wrinkles, resistance to the effects of chemicals, easy washing, quick drying, resistance to stretching and shrinking, and resistance to radiation. UV, low absorptivity, cheapness, and mass production of petrochemical sources are mentioned.

It is natural that polyester fibers also have disadvantages that should be considered when using them. The first disadvantage that can be attributed to polyester fibers is that these fibers are made of chemicals and their long-term direct contact with the body can lead to some problems. Also, polyester fibers cause the body to sweat more due to its insulation. High flammability, creation of static electricity, long-lasting smell compared to natural fibers and poor fluff retention compared to nylon, carpet and carpet are other disadvantages of polyester fibers.

Of course, these things do not mean that polyester fibers cause damage to the body. Biodegradable polyesters, which are prepared from lactic acid, glycolic acid, and other hydroxy acids, do not cause any problems in contact with the body. This type of biodegradable polyester fiber is even used in the production of some medical devices, including dissolvable sutures.

PVC Geomembrane

PVC Geomembrane Or Polyvinyl Chloride Geomembranes Are Formed From The Polymerisation Of Vinyl Chloride Monomer. Polyvinylchloride Was Discovered In 1835, And Pipes Made Of Polyvinylchloride Were Used By German Scientists And Engineers During World War Ii To Pipeline Water And Sewage To War-Torn Cities Quickly.

The Long Life Of These Pipes Was Determined By Pulling The Pipes Of That Period Out From Under The Soil. In Iran, PVC Pipes Are More Than 60 Years Old, Which Is Much Older Than Other Plastic Pipes. Generally, The Term PVC Is Used For All Materials Of Which Polyvinyl Chloride Has Been Used As A Constituent, Including Geomembrane Sheets Which Is The Subject Of Our Discussion.

Polyethylene Geomembrane

Polyethylene Is Obtained From The Polymerization Of Ethylene Monomers And Its Production History Returns To 1933. Initial Polymerization Processes Were Performed In Autoclave Reactors At The Temperature Range Of 93 To 316 Degrees Celsius Which Is Called High-Pressure Polyethylene.
This Product Was Produced By Using A Free Radical Chain Reaction And By Combining Ethylene Gas Under Pressure With Peroxide Or Very Small Amounts Of Oxygen As The Initiator. Polymers Are Large Molecules Totally That Form A Polymerization (Repeated Chemical Binding) Of Small And Semi-Crystalline Molecular Units.

The First Unit For The Production Of Polyethylene Is Called Ethylene, Which Is Colorless Gas Composed Of Two Carbon Atoms With a Dual Bond And 4 Hydrogen Atoms.

The Difference Between Pvcs Geomembrane And Polyethylene Geomembrane

PVC Geomembranes Or Polyvinyl Chloride Is A Type Of Plastic Product Of The Petrochemical Industry That has The Characteristics Of Heavy And Light Polyethylene. Easy And Fast Flexibility And Repairing Are Some Of The Advantages Of PVC, And One Of The Disadvantages Of This Insulation Is Less Resistance To Polyethylene To React With Liquids, Acids, And Chemicals, Which Are Due To Their Decomposition And Their Longevity.

It Is Sharply Reduced Compared To Polyethylene Sheets And It Is Better Not To Use It In The Presence Of Sewage And Hydrocarbons.

Polyethylene Geomembranes Usually Contain 97% Compact Polyethylene, Around 2.5% Black Carbon Or Masterbatch, And 0.5% Antioxidant Along With Other Additives Such As Butane Or Hexane, Which Increases The Flexibility Or Resistance To Environmental Factors.

Polyvinyl chloride fibers (PVC) Vinyon fibers

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a very widely used plastic and one of the most valuable products of the petrochemical industry (Polymer fibers). The most used Polyvinyl chloride is in construction and its fibers have the same characteristics.VinionIt is defined as a fiber, at least 85% of which are vinyl chloride polymerization monomer units.

the product : Zarif-Mosavar Industrial Group staple fibers

The most special property of PVC fibers ، is its non-flammability, which is the reason for many of its applications. Vinion is thermoplastic and very resistant to water and electrical and heat insulation. Its disadvantages are softening temperature and low tensile strength.

These fibers have low resistance, but have properties that make them useful in garments where heat is not a major factor. Apart from clothes, these fibers are used in upholstery or interior accessories such as curtains.

Advantages and disadvantages of Vinyon polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fibers

Advantages: Non-flammable, thermoplastic, very resistant to water and electrical and heat insulation, relatively cheap price, a wide range of flexibility, resistant to attack by insects and microorganisms.

Disadvantages: Low softening temperature and tensile strength, low resistance to strong solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, and chlorinated solvents, difficult to dye.

Olefin fibers and their applications

Olefin fibers of composition Polypropylene fibers are with ethylene produced The melting point of polyethylene is 120-125 °C and polypropylene is 160-165 °C. Their composition, i.e. polyolefin, cannot be used at temperatures above 100 degrees. Instead, with a density of 90-94 g/cm3 and very low moisture recovery, it is a suitable option for applications that require floating in water and low moisture recovery. Anchoring ropes, oil pollution containments, fishing nets, etc. are of this type of fiber.

It is also used as protection for sportswear and clothing due to its high insulation. Olefin fibers, due to their excellent strength and good tensile strength, are used in medical applications such as: It has wound dressing, bandage, plaster, kidney, artificial liver and lung, suture, surgical mesh, vascular grafts, artificial connections and ligaments, bedding, diapers, surgical gowns, napkins, etc.

Advantages and disadvantages of olefin fibers

Advantages: Low moisture absorption, good tensile strength, wear resistance and excellent resistance to chemicals, mold, microorganisms, and insects, good capillarity, and high insulation.

Disadvantages: it causes sweating due to insulation, low melting point, it is difficult to paint them, high flammability, low elasticity and creep due to tension, prone to destruction of photosynthesis.

Geotextile (literally means the earth protector) is actually a textile made of polypropylene (P.P) or polyester (PES / PET) polymers, which are produced in woven and non-woven forms.
Woven and Non-Woven Geotextile are permeable and have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect or drain when used with soil. They are produced by various methods such as needle punching ,Heat Bonding, or chemical (Resin Bonding) and have a felt-like structure without specific warp and woof (non-woven). , Bearing pressure and shocks, bitumen absorption and most importantly the possibility of selective passage means the passage of fluids while soil particles are not allowed to pass.

more : Geotextile Applications in Industries

woven geotextile fabric

Woven geotextile fabric is made by weaving polypropylene strips together and by an industrial textile machine. The use of a cross pattern in the production of this type of geotextiles has made this fabric extremely strong. The strength and quality of the woven geotextile hardware increases the tensile strength of the woven geotextile and thus makes it suitable for use under patios, paths, parking spaces and other applications that have a high strength membrane; But cost-effective need, it would be fit.

Structure and production process of textile geotextiles

The method of making these materials is the passage of fibers between each other and the formation of fiber. These geotextiles are made of single-stranded or multi-stranded fibers or cut films. Producing of such texture and suture fittings are used to produce special products. Most of the available geotextiles were made of polyester or polypropylene. Polypropylene material is strong and durable and is lighter than water (with a density of 9%), but polyester is heavier than water in terms of weight and has excellent creep and strength characteristics and is compatible with most soils.

non-woven geotextile fabric

Although nonwoven geotextile has less tensile strength than woven type; But do not forget that the strength, durability and drainage properties of this geotextile, like its woven model, are very ideal and suitable. Nonwoven geotextile is a felt-like fabric made by thermal bonding of polypropylene or a mixture of polypropylene and polyester fibers and then produced using needle drilling, calendaring and other methods.

This type of geotextile fabric is easier to cut and its permeability to water is high and its resistance to liquids does not increase over time, while the woven fabric disappears over time when they are used underground paths or for the Rivers. Therefore, considering such features, it can be said that non-woven geotextiles are used for underpasses and in land and storm drainage systems; Which are the places that need long-term stabilization and filtration of the earth are very ideal.

Geotextiles are divided into two general types, woven and non-woven.

structure and production process of nonwoven geotextiles

Nonwoven or nonwoven geotextiles are produced by bonding materials together, or by chemicals or heat, needle punching, or other methods. These types of geotextiles are made of strip-shaped fibers (short strip fibers, often 1 to 4 inches long) or continuous end filaments that are irregularly distributed in lattice layers. The filaments or fibers connecting the filaments or fibers are connected together. Non-woven geotextiles are made with a needle by taking a large number of small fibers and using a barbed needle to blend the fibers. The role of non-woven geotextiles is sub-drainage, erosion control and road reinforcement on soft and loose soils.

the difference woven & non-woven geotextiles

Geotextile fabrics are used according to the needs of projects and have various benefits and applications; But as the name of these two types of geotextiles shows, the main difference is not in how they work, but the main difference between the two is only in how they are produced. Woven geotextiles are woven and produced by industrial weaving machines, while non-woven geotextiles are produced by a special method called needlework method and by a series of barbed needles and have a non-woven and felt-like appearance.
Polypropylene geotextile is lighter, stronger and more durable than polyester geotextile.

Due to the different construction methods, the weight of a non-woven geotextile in modern methods is often less than the weight of a woven geotextile. In general, because woven geotextiles are used to create separation and reinforcement and do not depend on weight, and conversely, the weight of a non-woven geotextile is often determined because the higher calorific value, it would increase the strength and life.

History of Asphalt and Road Construction

Before installing geotextile for road stabilization, it is better to get more familiar with road construction and the difference between concrete asphalt and bitumen asphalt and the structure of geotextile.

The path that connects the two places is called a road, and this type of road dates back to Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) around 2200 BC. The peak of modern road construction in Iran dates back to the time of Reza Shah, which means that most of the old roads are now about 100 years old and new technologies must be used to build new roads and repair old roads. Roads are designed and built based on the use and passing of heavy and light vehicles and environmental factors.

In the construction of roads, we should pay attention to the factors such as water infiltration, groundwater, canals and infrastructure under the road, ambient temperature, and the contraction and expansion of asphalt in different seasons, and so on.

Three Types of Asphalt for Road Stabilization

Asphalt concrete is a composite or combined material that is commonly used to pave roads, parking lots, airports, as well as the core of soil dams. The history of using this type of asphalt dates back to the early twentieth century, which is classified into three main categories:

hot asphalt concrete

protective asphalt concrete

cold asphalt concrete

Which is the most familiar type of asphalt, ie the same bitumen asphalt and hot stone materials that are spread hot during work. In this type, more than 90% of asphalt mixture is usually made of stone materials.

Hot Asphalt Concrete

Hot asphalt is also classified as different types such as Topka surface asphalt, liner asphalt, asphalt sand, porous asphalt and bitumen asphalt with geotextile installation, which is more common in IRAN.

2. Protective Asphalt Concrete

Protective asphalt is a type of paving with a maximum thickness of 255 mm, which is used for the surface of sandy or asphalt roads. In protective asphalts, soluble bitumens, bitumens or pure bitumens with low humidity are used. Protective asphalts are used to make the road surface impermeable, prevent dust, increase the abrasion and slippery roads, as well as temporarily improve the existing asphalt and concrete procedures.

Protective Asphalt Concrete

This type of procedure is very cost-effective compared to hot asphalt due to its speed and ease of implementation and the limited need for asphalt machinery and equipment. Types of protective asphalts include single-layer, multi-layer, cold-rolled protective asphalt, primer type, single coat type, silket type, Red Mix type protective mix, asphalt concrete advantages.

3. Cold Asphalt Concrete

Cold asphalt is obtained by mixing stone materials with soluble bitumen or emulsion at ambient temperature and is divided into two categories: factory cold asphalt and on-site cold mix asphalt. Cold asphalt is used by installing geotextiles in all pavement layers, provided that all design criteria or categories along with traffic restrictions of the route are observed.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Asphalt Concrete for Road Stabilization

Currently, two types of hot bitumen asphalt and cold concrete asphalt are used to build roads and paths, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages, for example:

Advantages of bitumen asphalt : life-Time with quality materials is up to 10 years

Disadvantages of bitumen asphalt : possibility of bitumen leakage, high water absorption,

Advantages of concrete asphalt: Life-Time with quality materials up to 30 years, suitable for sloping areas, suitable for heavy vehicle traffic, beauty and environmental protection, reducing maintenance and repair costs, low water absorption, cold and heat resistant Intense, high run speed, improved drainage, light reflection at night

Disadvantages of concrete asphalt : the need for advanced and expensive machines, the need for high accuracy in its production and execution, the production of high noise during work, the presence of expansion joints, more difficult repairs and operations in concrete pavement.

Of course, the usage of concrete asphalt on roads instead of bitumen asphalt has been common in various countries for many years, especially in developed countries, but in Iran people, contractors and construction officials are strangers to it and are the only few companies that use this type of asphalt in Iran. They use that the Isfahan-Shiraz freeway is of this category, and to improve the life of the road, the geotextile of Zarif Mosour Company has been used.
